Soybeans, Soja , Glicyne max

Native of South-East Asia, soy  was domesticated thousands of years ago. Now soy is produced commercially in 99 countries.

In 2009,  222 268 904 tons were p[roduced worldwide, leaving you as a potential consumer with  32.5 kg of soybeans  to do something with. If  you'd eat it, and manage to stay away from cancer and  hormonal issues (good luck with that), it would be enough for  72.5 days at 2000 calories a day. There is enough  protein for  237 days at 50 g a day. That amount of soybeans  could deliver 6.8-7 liters  ( almost 2 gallons ) of soy oil. The leftovers could feed the poor milking cow for about a day and half or so, or a pig for a little bit less than one third of it's life ( an average American hog consumes  about 185-190 pounds  of soybean meal). Or you could make  up  to 280- 300-320 liters  of soymilk ( soya drink ) from that amount of beans if you don't need the cooking oil.
Please remember that HEXANE is used to extract that oil, which is toxic and carcinogenic.
Crop of 2009 could feed  1 358 million people , and supply protein for 4 445 million people.
Biggest producer is USA with 91 417 300 tons produced in 2009.  Biggest producer per capita is Argentina with  773 kg produced in 2009. In 2007, it was 1 217  kg of soy.

Land usage:  98 826 867 hectares were used in 2009 (more than ever before, almost 6.27% of all arable land in the world), a territory slightly less than Egypt. Since 1961, soy land usage grew 415%.

Best soy crop  worldwide  was in 2008,  230 581 106 tonnes. Production of  soy of 2009 fell despite of additional  2.65 million hectares planted because of a major drought in Argentina and Paraguay. Brazil 's soy crop was somewhat affected also.

Record yield worldwide was 2437.5 kg per hectare. Individual record yield of soy  belongs to Switzerland, 3991.5 kg/ha in 2000.

As of today, soybeans cost  $1368.4 per ton in Chicago. World crop of soy costs  US $290-300 billion.
